Castle Garden

Precision and prestige

The Castle Garden was designed as a contemporary interpretation of the French garden style. This style was first used on a large scale in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, in the mid-17th century. From there, it spread across Europe. Bouchout Castle was also given a French garden, but it has not been preserved. 

The French style is very formal, with lots of clean lines and geometric patterns. A typical feature are the parterres: seedbeds with short-clipped box hedges that together form elegant shapes. The addition of bulb plants and some evergreen plants keeps this garden attractive all year round. French-style gardens are very intensive - and therefore expensive - to maintain. They were primarily intended to impress visitors.
