Winter Garden
Subtle beauty
On the Ring Road, not far from the Woodland Garden, you will find the Winter Garden. As the name suggests, this garden is at its most beautiful in the depths of winter. Winter bloomers are no primadonnas; their beauty is subtle, subdued almost, with small flowers and soft colours. They often give off a wonderful scent.
From January to March, the various cultivated varieties of witch-hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia) blossom. These bloom on the bare wood with yellow, orange, brown, and coppery red spidery clusters of flowers. The underplanting of winter cyclamen (Cyclamen coum) provides a vibrant colourful display. Other eye-catchers are the paper bush (Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Grandiflora') and the wonderfully fragrant winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima). Brightly coloured dogwood branches (Cornus) also add to the spectacle.
