Weeds don't exist
Weed control
Sustainability and respect for diversity are of paramount importance at Mesie Botanic Garden.. Therefore, weeds don’t exist. In parts of our estate wild plants are even cherished. The Botanic Garden hasn’t used herbicides since 2015. A different approach was devised for controlling undesirable plants in the collections and on the paths.
Weeding in our plant collections and gardens is done by our own experienced gardeners and volunteers. Fighting weeds on the paths and roads is done manually or with alternative methods such as steam. This is very labour intensive, but requires far less plant knowledge. To this end, the Botanic Garden works in collaboration with social enterprises. These organisations provide people at a distance from the regular labour market with an extra chance in society by offering them meaningful work and job security.
