From swaying palms to forest giants
Tropical woody plants
The collection of tropical trees, shrubs, and climbing plants in the Plant Palace is world famous and frequently used for scientific studies. The Meise collection includes a number of exceptional species. Clavija cauliflora, for example, is a member of the primrose family that only grows in Colombia. The plant was brought back by one of our staff members in 1984, and when it flowered in 2008 it turned out to be the only known female specimen of its kind.
The palm collection is also worth mentioning. The collection at Meise includes more than 140 different species from nearly all subgroups of the family, making it one of the richest palm collections in Europe. You will see a selection of these when you enter the Plant Palace, but you will also find them in almost all the other greenhouses.
