[Science news] - The TETTRIs project
Meise Botanic Garden is set to play a pivotal role in the TETTRIs project, an ambitious initiative aimed at Transforming European Taxonomy through Training, Research and Innovations. Taxonomy, which involves classifying living organisms based on their traits and evolutionary origins, is essential for policy on biodiversity loss.
During the course of the project, the 17 European TETTRIs partners will tackle the shortage of taxonomic information and skills. This will be done through training in taxonomy and through the building of innovative tools.
“A crucial moment of the Project will come in spring since TETTRIs will open a call for third-party projects, granting cascade grants for a total amount of 1.8 million euro. Those projects will be at the core of the impact of TETTRIs”, explains Ana Casino, the Executive Director of the Consortium of the European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF).
The project was launched in Brussels in January 2023 with a kick-off meeting organized by CETAF and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. During the meeting, the participants developed a work program and strategy to carry out the project successfully and make it impactful both in policy-making and innovation.
TETTRIs is already making progress: social media channels (@TETTRIsEU for both Twitter and Facebook) and website (https://tettris.eu/) are already online. With Meise Botanic Garden's world-class collections as a valuable resource for scientific research in taxonomy, the institution is poised to make a significant contribution to the success of the TETTRIs project.
