Bird Calls' by Louise Lawler at the Botanic Garden

With the iconic work of American artist Louise Lawler, we bring contemporary art to the Botanic Garden. Until 14 January, 'Bird Calls' can be heard from the Ginkgo biloba near the Meise-Dorp entrance. It is the first of a series of collaborations with CC Strombeek.

Bird Calls (1972-81) by Louise Lawler has previously been shown at the MOMA in New York, at DOCUMENTA in Kassel and at the Middelheim Museum. In a series of bird calls sung by the artist, the names of male artists who make up the canon in major Western museum collections, such as Vito Acconci, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha, are heard. Each name becomes a unique sound that responds to the phonetic character or syllables of the name. Some names are often repeated and some are difficult to understand.

Within an artistic practice, it questions art and the institutional, economic and ideological frameworks that support its existence and representation. The work can be seen and heard until 14 January at the Ginkgo biloba near the Meise-Dorp entrance.
